Armed Force Flag Day: Date, History and Importance.

“Till the time we have our brave and strong Indian armed force guarding us 24/7. We know we are in best and safe hands”. Armed Forces Flag Day or Flag Day celebrated annually on 7 December.

This day dedicated to India towards the collection of funds from the Indians for the welfare of Indian armed force personnel. This day celebrated since 1949.

Over years this day has become a tradition to celebrate this day as an honor to the Indian soldiers, sailors, and airmen.

History :

After Independence, there was a need to set up a government that works for the welfare of Armed force. On August 28, 1949 a committee set up under defense minister decided to propose flag day annually on 7 December.

The aim behind proposing this day to distribute the Indian armed flags to the Indian population. Collect some donations which can used as the welfare for the armed forces including soldiers, sailors, and airmen.

This day gained significance as it is responsibility of the civilian population to take care of families and dependents of the armed force. as this armed force works 24/7 living thousands of kilometers away from their homes just to safeguard the nation.

Importance :

This day mainly celebrated to serve the three basic purposes:·       

  • Rehabilitation of battle casualties·       
  • Welfare of serving personnel, their families, and dependents ·       
  • Resettlement and welfare of ex-servicemen and their families.

Time to show gratitude and appreciation to armed forces personnel and remember those who sacrificed their lives for the nation

This day the three branches of the Indian armed force Indian Army, the Indian Navy, and the Indian Airforce arrange a variety of shows and carnival. As to show their contribution and efforts made by them in serving the country wholeheartedly.  

Flag Day Fund :

This day proposed with the idea that Indian armed force flags will distributed among the population and will receive some donations which will help in the welfare of the armed forces personnel. The fund collection managed throughout the country by the local arms of the Kendriya Sainik Board (KSB).

This fund collected for -·      

  • War bereaved·      
  • War injured/war disabled·      
  • Ex-servicemen/serving personnel.
